Day Two of Vacation 2011: Traveling to Vancouver Island

Ginny on the beach

August 1
We set out from Seattle in the morning to catch a ferry to Vancouver Island.  We wound around open fields with patches of wild flowers, past fresh berry stands and dense forest greenery.  We stopped for lunch at a delightful little sandwich place.  We ate outside under an arbor, with little birds sweeping under the eaves to their nests.
We continued driving to the ferry, where there was a marvelous view of snowy-peaked mountains.  Waiting for the ferry, we climbed down to the rocky beach, watching cute children and dogs, and digging up the little crabs that were under every rock and clump of seaweed.
The sky was rosy when we arrived at Fairburn Farms after our two-hour ferry ride across the sparkling water around the San Juan Islands.  To get there we wound down a long, winding dirt road, passing sprawling farms and wild glens sprinkled with fireweed.
Apollo!!!!!
A big black dog greeted us with his barking, then Brett came out to welcome us in.  The dog, Apollo, was very friendly, and my first sight of the grounds was breathtaking.  The house, too was a sight to behold.  It was a large old wood house, white with worn-red trim, cutely shuttered windows and a grand porch with chairs for admiring the scenery.  Flowers lined the walkway, and a large vegetable garden got my mom and sister excited.
